Firm Failure and Financial Crisis

چکیده
In this paper we try to analyze the link between some industrial policies in South Korea and the 1997 ̄nancial crisis. We argue that while the industrial policies have greatly promoted the development of many local industries, they also have encouraged local ̄rms to get over-optimistic, to over-invest, and to over-produce. That increases the risks the ̄rms are facing. When a bad time occurs, many of the ̄rms will face di±culty. When a su±ciently large number of them have di±culty, their troubles become the troubles of the economy. Thanks are due to Young Man Yoon and two anonymous reviewers for valuable comments. All remaining errors and shortcomings are mine.

The results from this study reaffirm that firms with low financial leverage tend to perform bette...

How did problems in a relatively small portion of the home mortgage market trigger the most severe financial crisis in the United States since the Great Depression? Several developments played a role, including the proliferation of complex mortgage-backed securities and derivatives with highly opaque structures, high leverage, and inadequate risk management. These, in turn, created systemic ris...

The financial crisis in the Fall of 1998 was the first post-World War II crisis in which events in emerging market economies seriously threatened the financial stability of the West, and where the origins of the crisis was clearly to be found in the workings of liberalised markets and private sector institutions. The spark was the financial crisis that overwhelmed many of the Asian economies in...
متن کاملRollover Risk and Credit Spreads in the Financial Crisis of 2008
This paper is an empirical investigation of the asset pricing implication of rollover risk, the risk that a firm might not be able to refinance its due liabilities. I focus on the long-term debt rollover risk and use the proportion of long-term debt falling due within the year to measure a firm’s exposure to rollover risk. I find that firm-specific rollover risk coupled with deteriorating marke...
